Swinging back into action
Earlier this month, it was revealed that Eidos had patented the name Tomb Raider Underworld. The rumours that it was related to the eighth game in the Tomb Raider series have today been confirmed via PLAY magazine, who have an exclusive on this latest adventure and reveal that it "takes place after the events of Tomb Raider Legend".The game will be developed by U.S. developer Crystal Dynamics, who has previously worked on both Tomb Raider Legend and this year's Tomb Raider Anniversary. The new title is set to be the best looking game of the series so far and will feature a changing weather system. "We developed a hybrid lighting model that combines dynamic lights with carefully created light maps to make our world look stunning in ways that none of the available methods could achieve alone, "reads the article.
They'll also be more attention paid to the environment and the way in which Lara can affect it. If she kills an enemy their bodies will remain on the ground rather than disappear. She'll also - please don't get too excited - leave her footprints in the mud!!
The developers are also looking at improving Lara's movements through the use of motion capturing "to bring a more natural fluidity to her movements, with proper weight and secondary motion."
Now that the cat is out of the bag, we're expecting a list of new features and screenshots very shortly. After Tomb Raider Anniversary I thought the series was looking really tired, so let's hope they can revitalise it for 2008 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
