One of Australia’s largest developers, Krome Studios, who were the masteminds behind Xbox 360’s Game Room, has closed its doors this week.

The company had already whittled down its staff from a 400 strong workforce to just 100 so far this year, and it’s now believed that the remaining staff have now vacated the company’s Melbourne and Brisbane offices.

The Melbourne base of Krome Studio’s has a long history, having started off developing games such as The Hobbit, under the popular Melbourne House name. Among other games the developer is credited to are The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and soon to be released Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole,

The project Krome has most been known for in recent years is the ill-fated Game Room, which replicates the old-school look, sound, and feel of a retro video game arcade. Sadly, it didn’t take off in the way that Krome or Microsoft expected.

Our sympathies go to all Krome employees who have lost their jobs.

All the games from Krome Studios
• Championship Surfer
• Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
• The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius: Jet Fusion
• Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2: Bush Rescue
• King Arthur
• Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan
• The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
• The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night
• Viva Piñata: Party Animals)
• Hellboy: The Science of Evil
• Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Lightsaber Duels
• Scene It? Box Office Smash
• Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes
• Game Room
• Blade Kitten
• Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Before these games, Krome had a long history, including work on the classic "Way Of The Exploding Fist. For more information on the company check out this page

I've read they expanded much too rapidly and left it far too late to restructure. It's not a good climate for studios right now, too many shutting their doors. Potential talent going to waste and we all lose.

Games Room, while I watched a few Quick Looks elsewhere, didn't get any real attention from me. Had the price been lower I might have picked up a few titles but on the whole, most of it wasn't worth downloading.

Indeed, I didn't see Microsoft touting it much after the initial release. At least we didn't get this one forced down our throats!
