A voluntary online scheme has been launched by the British Board of Film Classification aimed at rating and regulating downloadable video games and digital downloads on the net.

Companies that sign up to the scheme will use the age ratings on their products. So far, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Europe have already joined, but the BBFC is expecting further significant companies to join up.

According to the BBC:

The scheme could also be rolled out to include online services such as Microsoft's Xbox Live, Sony's PlayStation Network and Nintendo's WiiWare, all of which offer video and games for download.

Joining the scheme will require companies to place BBFC ratings on their products, includin U, 15 and 18 certificates. In addition, any website with content aimed at an older audeince will have to have "gate keeping" system aimed at preventing access from children.

They going to ask for a copy of your passport or driving license when you try and enter the website or purchase a game online?

Nah, it's the same rubbish system that many video game websites use already where you simply type in your d.o.b. I can't see it doing anything. Just because it has 18 plastered on it means nothing. In fact it probably makes it more interesting to those under age.

Doesnt this age rating system just mean that the game or movie isnt allowed to be sold to a person that is under that age?

Nothing to do with, your not allowed to play it or watch the film because you are too young. It has an 18 sticker on it so your not allowed to play or watch it.
