Last week we saw ZTE launch a ground breaking dual 5.2-inch screen smartphone, the ZTE Axon M. The launch garnered generally positive reactions, there has been much talk and teasing of dual-and foldable smartphones in recent years so it’s good to see one ready for market. However, the implementation with a significant border between the twin screens let the device down a little.
CNet has since revealed that Huawei has a working prototype dual-screen foldable phone. Unlike ZTE, the firm isn’t that happy with the “small gap” between the screen pair. Thus Huawei expects to dedicate some more design and tech resources on the product, with a broad goal of releasing a dual-screen device in 2018.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, spoke to CNet in an interview after the introduction of the Ai-enabled Huawei Mate 10 and Made 10 Pro last week. Yu claimed that there was already a working sample of a dual-screen device in the Huawei labs. “We still have a small gap [between the screens]. That's not good, and we should get rid of that gap," Yu admitted to the CNet staffer.
Huawei takes aim at Samsung design
Certainly one would expect Huawei to be able to present a more refined vision of dual-screen foldable smartphones than ZTE, a budget device maker. Huawei is ambitious and has plenty of resources. Later in the above linked interview with CNet, Yu opined that his company would “definitely” overtake Samsung and Apple in the world smartphone vendor rankings. “That's our destiny. Maybe I'm not humble ... but nobody can stop us.”
