A pioneering combination of technology and bedding

HEXUS CES 2008 coverage

On show at CES this year was a bed from Legget & Platt that makes all other beds pale in comparison. Seeing as we spend so many hours a day asleep, it's a wonder why our beds aren't filled with more gadgetry.

Not to worry, the Starry Night bed (pictured below), combines technology and bedding and provides a whole host of rather useful features.

Starry Night

First up is its anti-snoring technology. The bed detects when a person snores (with a refined vibration-detection system no less) and then raises the angle of the bed by 7 degrees. Once snoring stops, the bed returns to its original position.

That's not all, the bed has dual programmable temperature control, built in wireless internet connectivity, a wireless RF remote via Microsoft's Media Centre and an iPod docking station too.

Hold on, we're just getting warmed up here. It also has 1.5 terabytes of storage space for all your music and videos, its OS runs on an SSD drive to make sure you're not left waiting and it has 4GBs of DDR2 RAM. Yep, this is a bed we're talking about.

So what do you do with all the movies stored on your bed? Well, unfortunately there's no built in Plasma screen at the foot of the bed. Instead, they've gone one better. There's a 1080p LCD projector built into the headboard, not to mention four eight-inch subwoofers in the bed and plenty of surround sound speakers giving 2,500 watts of audio power.

Yet somehow, they expect people to sleep in it. The Starry Night bed isn't expected to reach retail until 2009 and depending on your configuration options, it'll cost between $20,000 and $50,000. Enough to make anybody lose sleep.

Great concept - stupid price! :)
I need to get a job so I can get some cash to buy that.

Who cares what the rest of your house is like if you have that bed. :)
I have trouble getting out of bed as it is, if I had one of those I'd never leave it! It just needs a built in shower and kitchen, then it'd be complete.
I was just thinking there was sucha massive niche in the computerized bed matket…. and whaddya know
hmm a vibration detection system that raises and lowers the bed and also 4 8inch sub woofs, that'll work. the bed will go crazy when you start playing rammstein at 3 in the morning.
