The 2009 Oscar nominations have been announced by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads the way with 13 nominations - including best picture and achievement in directing.
British director Danny Boyle also received a nod for achievement in directing and his Slumdog Millionaire picked up 10 nominations. Box-office smash The Dark Knight picked up eight nominations, but was restricted to mostly technical categories. As expected, Heath Ledger was nominated as a supporting actor for his depiction of The Joker in the Batman Begins sequel, but Christopher Nolan missed out on an achievement in directing award and the movie itself failed to pick up a best picture nomination.
Elsewhere, another surprise omission is Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrestler" - the title track to Darren Aronofsky's movie failed to pick up a nomination for best original song, a category in which Slumdog Millionaire picked up two nominations.
The complete list of nominees is as follows, and the 81st Oscar ceremony is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on February 22nd.
