Front rank fire! Rear rank fire, reload!

Zulu is considered among most critics to be the finest war film ever made. Michael Caine’s performance as a feuding lieutenant who must force his troops to rally together is iconic and well-loved for its insouciant timing and stood him in line with some of the finest actors of his generation.

The year is 1879 in Zululand - the scene of an early battle in the Anglo-Zulu war. A Zulu army has crushingly beaten an army of Brits and is triumphantly gathering its weapons ready for the next strike. Meanwhile, over at Rorke’s Drift, a missionary station in Natal being used as a supply dump and hospital for fellow troops, commanders receive word of the fierce defeat over the border and that the glorious Zulu army is heading right for them.

Armed with nothing more than a squadron of injured soldiers and some British grit, the commanders must fortify their base and prepare for battle. Their makeshift operation, including sacks and crates, is all well and good but will it protect them from the canny opponent who will stop at nothing to outwit the Brits? When the Zulus arrive, adorned and dancing, their clever ruse allows yet further attacks. The battle that ensues is one that will not be won easily, but nor will the British army allow their determination to be dampened.

Starring a host of heavyweights – Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins, Ulla Jacobsson, James Booth and the inimitable Michael Caine, legend Richard Burton narrates the moving opening and closing scenes. The film is famed for its stirring score and masterful battle scenes – and won a BAFTA for the art direction.

Zulu is a masterpiece in war film and this remastered special collector’s edition DVD is full of special features to enjoy - a must for any film collector.
