Apple has quickly snuck out its third-generation iPod shuffle today, and it's smaller than ever.

Measuring just 48.2mm x 17.5mm x 7.8mm, and weighing only 10.7g, it's nearly half the size of second-generation models and Apple claims it to be the first music player that talks to you. That's right, in order to make up for the iPod shuffle's lack of display, a new VoiceOver feature will tell listeners which song and artist is playing at the touch of a button.

It's all change in terms of aesthetics, too. The new iPod shuffle - available with a 4GB capacity - sports an aluminium design with a built-in stainless steel clip. The unit itself now provides only a simple on/off button, and all playback controls have been relocated to the earphone cord.

There's a very useful upgrade to the iPod shuffle's software, too, as the 4GB third-generation model is the first to support playlists. Apple claims the built-in rechargeable lithium polymer battery can provide up to 10 hours of playback, and it's currently offering free laser engraving on all new iPod models.

The 4GB iPod shuffle, available in black or silver, is available from the Apple Store priced at Ā£59.

The PC gets a synthesized woman voice, and the Mac get a male one. Hmm there's the format debate over!

Be nice if those phones could work with a normal iPod as well, would just need a software update. I also see they have abandoned the other fruity colours.
u can change the voice of macs and PCs.

I like it but the controls on the headphone cord, they better come with a normal jackplug on top of it otherwise your stuck with a crapy pair of ipod headphones.

I think the fruity colours your refering to are the nano ones.
“all playback controls have been relocated to the earphone cord”

meaning you'll be forced into paying a gazillion pound for inferior headsets just cos they're made by the almighty apple.

I'd imagine you'd be able to plug your own ‘phones into the cord control, but you never know with Apple’s “superior” design…
Why, why why why why why, would you want it to talk at you when changing music?

Hey it sounds like your listening to a well mixed album, not content with been to lazy to write it so it plays back gapplessly we are now going to use a synthed voice too.

But where will this madness end?
