-Highly integrated processor powers rooftop device in networks
offering high-speed Internet access to those
underserved by DSL and cable-

AUSTIN, TX-March 3, 2003 - AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the AMD Alchemy(tm) Solutions Au1000 processor has been selected by Omnilux(tm), to power its Omni-Node(tm), a small, easily installed Free Space Optics (FSO) device that uses infrared light to deliver high-speed Internet access to homes and businesses. The Omnilux wireless broadband platform is a leading-edge "last mile" technology that gives Internet Service Providers (ISPs) a way to bring broadband services to homes and businesses without using Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL), cable networks, or large wireless radio towers to reach customers.

The Omnilux network combines proven wireless technologies with intelligent software to enable ISPs to extend the local wired infrastructure to reach homes and businesses. FSO uses infrared light as a vehicle to transmit data wirelessly over distances of up to 300 meters. By using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), combined with other technologies, Omnilux has been able to create an affordable, FSO-based device--the Omni-Node--that can provide up to 100 Megabits per second, full duplex service (full duplex means the device operates at equal speeds for both sending and receiving data, at the same time).

"We evaluated over 50 processors for the Omni-Node," said Carter Moursund, vice president of technology and co-founder of Omnilux. "The Au1000 processor came out on top for feature integration, performance, and the completeness of the Board Support Package (BSP)." "We work with our customers to provide them with complete solutions that are designed to meet their processing needs for high-integration, high-performance and low-power," said Phil Pompa, AMD's vice president of marketing for the Personal Connectivity Solutions Group. "Omnilux took the highly-integrated solution that the Au1000 processor provides and created an innovative technology platform that can help bring the benefits of high-speed Internet access to customers who could not get it by any other means."

"This is the breakthrough the ISP industry has been waiting for to open competition in broadband service. It will expand opportunities for consumers that are currently underserved by local phone or cable companies in terms of high speed Internet access," Moursund said. "Consumers will be the big winners because of the competitive edge Omnilux technology provides the ISPs. Greater competition in this market should result in a greater range of more affordable offerings."
