Variations on the theme
There are also a couple of variations on the theme. The Vivienne Tam edition is red with pink flowers on it and apparently designed to appeal to women.
HP's marketing people understandably couldn't just position it as "the pink one for birds" and instead insist: "It seeks to satisfy the highly mobile, Internet-centric fashionista," so there you go. Women can buy it for $699.
The other variation is one that comes with a suite of HP and third party software called MIE (mobile internet experience). While the marketing department was clearly not kept on a tight enough leash during this launch, this does look like an interesting development as MIE runs on Linux.
In that respect this edition may be designed to compete with cheaper Linux options like the Acer Aspire 1, which also run bespoke Linux software. The HP Mini 1000 with MIE still comes in at $379 though and with Tesco offering the Aspire 1 for £179 that might not be low enough.
The Vivienne Tam edition is expected to be available in the US in December and the MIE edition in January.
