Pudding palaver

Every Christmas there's always one ‘must-have' item that's impossible to get your hands on whether it's a games console, Furby or meager cranberries...and this year it's chef extraordinaire Heston Blumenthal's ‘Hidden Orange' pudding.

While an orangey twist on the traditional Christmas pud may not be extraordinary in itself, the price the culinary delights are fetching on eBay definitely is!

In case anyone has missed out on the furor, The Hidden Orange pudding has a candied Valencia orange inside and has completely sold out in Waitrose stores after going on sale for £13.99 just one week ago.

It is now notching up huge profits on the popular internet auction site, with The Daily Mail reporting that one sold for a staggering £129.

At the time of writing there are numerous puddings on sale on eBay with some listed for more than a signed numbered copy of Blumenthal's Fantastical Feasts cookery bible.

There are 16 bids for the chef's orange pudding priced at £100, while one generous seller has one up for grabs to ‘buy it now' for £245...surely enough to keep a man in traditional puddings for a couple of years? There seem to be plenty fetching around £50 to £70 each.

With food pundits speculating whether Waitrose had set its bar too high with a £13.99 price tag for the gourmet pudding, it seems that savvy shoppers are now having the last laugh and likely a very merry Christmas if they have stocked up on Blumenthal's puddings.

According to The Daily Mail, Waitrose is cooking up a storm trying to make new Hidden Orange puddings to restock its shelves but apparently the oranges take some 7 weeks to cure so it looks like foodies might have to wait until the New Year to have their cake/pud and eat it...or fork out big time on eBay.
