Net neutrality rears its head yet again

"In fact," he continued, "the top 10 telephone prefixes -- the area code plus the first three digits of a seven digit number, e.g., 555-555-XXXX -- generated more than 160 times the expected traffic volumes, and accounted for a whopping 26 percent of our monthly connection costs."

Google says it had to act as the schemes were "exploiting the free nature of Google Voice -- making it harder for us to offer this new service to users."

Google reckons the current fix is only a temporary one, as the Internet giant is still lobbying the FCC to rethink its local carrier compensation rules which are causing the issues in the first place.

"The bottom line is that we still believe the Commission needs to repair our nation's broken carrier compensation system," Whit wittered. "The current system simply does not serve consumers well and these types of schemes point up the pressing need for reform."

AT&T wants the FCC to force Google to abide by the same standards other local telephone service providers have to, whilst Google protests that broadband Internet providers like AT&T need to comply with proposed net neutrality laws. Earlier this month AT&T wrote to the FCC claiming Google was acting in a monopolistic and unfair fashion.
