Behind closed doors

The results are all the more shocking in light of the Intel sponsored poll which found that 80 percent of adults felt there were certain "unspoken rules about mobile technology usage" including a resounding 60 percent who found the idea of using a mobile device while on a date as inappropriate. Presumably, then, once one gets past first dates and into the sack, it all becomes quite acceptable. Doh.

69 per cent of those who took part in the Intel survey even went as far as to maintain that "checking e-mails, sending text messages and making phone calls while in the company of others, [on a mobile device was] unacceptable."

Tweeting at the table (or using an Internet-enabled device) was found rude by 52 percent of respondents, whereas 75 per cent found it perfectly acceptable to give some face time to facebook whilst on the loo. Find the bizarre hygene logic in that, if you will.

Likewise, whereas sex may not be quite so taboo for quick fingered Internet socialites, a whopping 87 per cent could not abide by the thought of others using mobile internet devices at religious venues.

So it seems that using your mobile device has become a furtive, shameful act to be done in private, ideally in the toilet. Are we sure we're not confusing it with something else?
