A couple of national newspapers, perhaps predictably the two most left-leaning ones: The Guardian and The Independent, jumped on this ‘press release' and wrote stories based on it.

And the plot thickens; the first mainstream media to report on this was The Baltimore Sun, which in turn got the story when Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon started twittering, and as her second tweet, announced the press release.

Here's the funny bit: the press release, the website and even the Twitter feed were all fakes, created by political blogger Alex Hilton, otherwise known as Recess Monkey. He made an exact copy of the real mayor's website, and inserted the press release link.

Well, almost exact. At the bottom on the fake site it says "Copyright R. Monkee Esq". The statement hyperlinks to recessmonkey.com, which in turn contains only a short note advising you view source, but not on this website. Going back to the fake mayor's website and viewing source reveals the message below.

Brilliant.

Fair play to the Guardian and Independent that they held their hands up and admitted openly they fell for the hoax.
