The third quarter also represented a significant uplift for the whole PC industry, with the improvement on the previous quarter of 19 percent representing the biggest sequential increase iSuppli has ever seen.

"The sequential and year-over-year shipment increases show that the PC industry emerged from the downturn and began to grow again in the third quarter," said Wilkins.

While we've been dependent on consumer spend for the past year or so, there are also some signs businesses are starting to put their hands in their pockets too. IDC reports that, while EMEA server volume and revenue is down a quarter on a year ago, there is actually some small improvement on the previous quarter.

"Overall, the EMEA server market environment remains challenging despite better than expected performance in the larger countries such as the U.K., Germany, Spain, and to a lesser extent Russia," said Nathaniel Martinez, director of IDC European systems and infrastructure solutions. "Platform migrations, consolidation projects and datacenter rejuvenation investments are bringing some activity to the market place."
