Acer’s high

There are a couple of important milestones in the latest IDC worldwide PC shipment report. Firstly, and most importantly, the global PC market has returned to growth, with PC shipments up 2.3 percent year-on-year in Q3, following declines in the previous two quarters. This seems to have been driven mainly by the US and China.

But another significant turning point concerned the relative decline of Dell, which relinquished its status as the second biggest global PC vendor to Acer and lost first place in the US to HP. Dell was the only one of the big five vendors to suffer a year-on-year decline in PC shipments. Lenovo seems to have raised its game a fair bit, no doubt helped by its dominance of the Chinese market.

Loren Loverde, program director for IDC's Tracker Program, commented: "The competitive landscape, the transition to portables, new and low-power designs, growth in retail and consumer segments, and the impact of falling prices are all reflected in the gains by HP and Acer, as well as overall market growth."

IDC's VP of clients and displays, Bob O'Donnell, added: "With the forthcoming launch of Windows 7 and expected commercial refresh beginning in 2010, the prospects for future PC market growth are very solid."

Doesn't surprise me, Acer have been coming out with some fantastic consumer-level laptops recently (55XX and 57XX series), whereas Dell's 1545 model is poor in comparison!
Exactly. Acer have some cracking units these days. Few of my family and friends have bought Acer laptops etc.
Acer's netbooks would have helped those results too.

Interesting that we've all heard that 11% apple growth being shouted out,
yet Acer and Toshiba had much larger 48% /37% rises…

I have no problems with my dell inspiron 1545

what do you think is wrong with the dell inpiron 1545 and why do you think the Acer's are better?

do acer still make you create restore to factory settings disc yourself? or do they provide the just as bad recovery partition? or thirdly do they acually supply a windows disc?

I work in a certain retail store that has these 2 and the HP/Compaq G60/CQ60 as its main sellers.
My comments stem from the return rates I have seen - we have far more of the dells come back than the other 2. It's a shame, because I'm a dell owner myself and generally they're good laptops.

Acer provide a recovery partition and the option to copy this onto a disc. While it would be nice to include a windows disc like dell do, you have to understand that for most consumers, the recovery partition/disc is the best route since they don't want or know how to reinstall OS, drivers, applications etc using the disc.
