Low power graphics designer Imagination Technologies launched its latest embedded graphics core design - the POWERVR SGX545 - at CES 2010 today, claiming it to be the first of its type to be DirectX10.1 capable.

The POWERVR SGX545 supports the OpenGL ES 2.x, OpenGL 3.2 and OpenCL 1.0 graphics APIs as well as DX10.1, and should offer SoC makers the opportunity to significantly boost the graphics processing capabilities of their chips. With NVIDIA launching its second generation Tegra and Qualcomm's Snapdragon starting to crop up everywhere, this design could prove popular.

"Combining our many years of experience in the embedded, mobile and PC-based DirectX graphics worlds, POWERVR SGX 545 takes the possibilities of hand-held graphics to a new level," said Tony King-Smith, VP of marketing at Imagination. "This makes POWERVR SGX545 a compelling solution for application processor SoC designers targeting the next generation of netbook and MID mobile products demanding exceptional graphics capabilities."

Here's a shot of its recently launched sibling, the POWERVR SGX 540, inside a Samsung chip, pwering a Samsung screen.

PowerVR the competition for 3Dfx at one point? There was that benchmark that “showed off its rendering technique” too, VillageMark:

And it was released in September last year I believe.
