Milestone
Market researcher IDC has released its latest figures for the smartphone market in Q4 2010 and for the whole year. Smartphone shipments almost doubled year-on-year to over 100 million units in Q4.
Last month IDC published its preliminary figures for global PC shipments in Q4. They grew by a mere 2.7 percent to around 92 million units.
That means, according to IDC's figures, smartphone shipments overtook those of PC for the first time in Q4 2010.
This is just a milestone, but it's a pretty significant one. Of course the definition of ‘smartphone' is open to debate, but it should encapsulate hand-held devices with Internet connectivity and computing functionality. Mini-PCs, in other words.
To put all this into perspective we've reproduced some IDC tables below, showing the smartphone, PC and total phone markets. Note smartphones should overtake PCs on a full-year basis and they remain only a small minority of total mobile phones shipped.
