Falling Apple
The most conspicuous loser on our list was Apple. There were a couple of pieces of news last week that may have contributed to the fall of over eight percent, all of which happened early on Wednesday 17th.
First Apple announced its attendance at the next Maworld Expo would be its last, and that it was feeling pretty unenthusiastic about trade shows on the whole. Then the French competition regulator ruled that Apple has to allow mobile phone operator other than its preferred Orange to sell the iPhone.
The trade show news had the knock on effect of renewing speculation about the health of Apple's talismanic boss Steve Jobs and people will be wondering whether the French news sets a precedent, which would presumably be bad news for Apple as it gets a healthy kick-back on sales of the iPhone from its sole-supplier model.
Introducing competition into the iPhone supplier market would mean that Apple couldn't put such a price premium on the handsets. Bad news for Apple but good news for everyone else.
