HEXUS.sharewatch: Apple profit beats expectations thanks to iPhone

The news was less good for Yahoo! Its revenue of $1.786 billion and earnings per share of nine cents were more or less in line with expectations, but the company still announced plans to cut at least ten percent of its workforce in the next quarter.

Among the one-off expenses accounted for in this quarter was $37 million fighting off Microsoft's attempts to buy the company for $33 per share. Yahoo!'s shares closed at around $12 yesterday so money well spent there then. Still, they did rise five percent in after-hours trading, so only $20 per share to go.

Other results include fabless semiconductor company Broadcom, which beat expectations and was 8.7 percent up after hours. Peripherals outfit Logitech disappointed and saw its shares drop 15 percent yesterday. Other losers were Texas Instruments, Lexmark and Sun Microsystems - the latter suffering a 17 percent share price drop.

Among the earnings announcements still to come this week are Microsoft, Seagate, Western Digital, Avnet and Ingram Micro.

We didn't publish our usual HEXUS.sharewatch analysis last Monday so these figures represent a longer time period than usual. That's probably for the best as day-to-day changes can be very difficult to interpret right now.

The nine day comparison is surprisingly positive, especially when you consider that Apple's after-hours gain hasn't been included yet. Major gainers include Google, Microsoft and NVIDIA, while Dell and Tech Data's shares continue to struggle.
