Final thoughts and rating
Patriot's Pyro SE is the latest in a long line of blazing-fast SandForce SSDs. By using a high-speed SF-2281 controller and performance-orientated asynchronous NAND flash memory, the drive is able to churn out staggering numbers in all the common benchmarks.
As far as single-component upgrades are concerned, this ranks as one of the very best.
Patriot's challenge, however, is that it isn't alone in offering this particular blend of SandForce speed, and in order to compete against established drives the Pyro SE will need to be competitively priced.
At the time of writing, Corsair's practically-identical 120GB Force GT is available at around £165, while Kingston's similarly-equipped 120GB HyperX is going for £159. With no bundled 3.5in drive mount and no added incentive to speak of, Patriot's solution needs to undercut the competition and arrive at around £155.
Bottom line: the Pyro SE offers blistering all-round speed and acts as an excellent upgrade to any high-end system, but it isn't the only drive of its kind and if the price isn't right, it may struggle to stand out in a burgeoning SandForce crowd.
The Good
Delivers stonking speeds via SATA 6Gbps
Offers all the benefits of an SSD; including instant access and no noise
The Bad
No bundled software or 3.5in mount
