Final thoughts and rating
We enjoy seeing manufacturers try something a little different, but Patriot has taken a gamble with its Phison-powered Torqx 2 SSD, and the gamble hasn't quite paid off.
As a mid-range solution, the 128GB Torqx 2 has some merit - it's significantly quicker than a hard disk, has ample sequential throughput and it offers many of the benefits of solid-state storage; including near-instant access times, no moving parts, greater resistance to shock or vibration and practically silent operation.
What's missing from the drive's feature list is a compelling price. At around £130, or less, the drive could have potential as a mid-range upgrade, but as it stands, the £160 sticker puts it out of contention.
With lacklustre performance at high queue depths and a bundle that doesn't include a 3.5in mount or any migration software, this is a drive that's comfortably out-performed and out-classed by a range of existing solutions.
The Good
Significantly quicker than most hard disks
The Bad
Costs almost as much as faster SandForce-based SSDs
Performance nosedives at high queue depths
No bundled accessories
