Conclusion

Manufacturers tend to favour sequential throughput benchmarks, but real-world performance can vary depending on the type of data being moved to and fro. Our second test sheds light on two potential workloads; copying across a folder containing large files such as ISOs; and copying across a program folder full of various small files. LaCie's Mobile SSD is once again up there with the speediest USB drives we've tested.

Summary

...LaCie is betting on those consumers who happily spend big in order to obtain the trendiest of kit.

The LaCie Mobile SSD is a premium external USB drive aimed squarely at Mac users and tech enthusiasts prone to spending more than necessary.

It is this unabashed positioning that allows the product to function in today's market. True, there are cheaper drives out there that are just as quick and every bit as portable, but LaCie is betting on those consumers who happily spend big in order to obtain the trendiest of kit.

On the inside the drive is, for all intents and purposes, a carbon copy of the Fast SSD from parent company Seagate. What sets the LaCie Mobile SSD apart is a super-sleek aluminium chassis that looks the part and is priced accordingly. And did we mention it comes in Space Grey?
