HEXUS Snapshot: ...producing solid performance in our benchmarks, particularly gaming, we can recommend them to folk looking to extract the most out of an AMD APU build.

AMD's latest breed of APUs provide fresh impetus for DDR3 memory manufacturers. The processors' on-board graphics, which are the best in class, respond favourably when run with faster-than-default RAM, so much so that choosing a well-specified 2,133MHz set can provide a performance boost of up to 20 per cent.

In fact, going further and underscoring the attractiveness of this speed of memory, it's unlikely that the Trinity platform will readily accept the faster, more-expensive DDR3-2,400MHz RAM, as memory-controller limitations come into play.

The maturation of DDR3 technology also means that 2,133MHz-rated modules don't attract the exorbitant premiums witnessed last year. The dual-channel G.Skill Ripjaws X, reviewed here, is a case in point. Priced at around Ā£40 for an 8GB (2x4GB) pack and producing solid performance in our benchmarks, particularly gaming, we can recommend them to folk looking to extract the most out of an AMD APU build.

The Good

Can provide a 20pc boost to an APU's graphics
Aesthetically attractive
Keen price

The Bad

Nothing of note on an AMD APU platform

Spend a couple of quid more and you can have some 30nm Samsung Green RAM that'll run the G-skill's stock settings at 1.35V and their height is about the height of the clips of the RAM slots. All it takes is a minute or two in your bios.
