Final thoughts and rating
Power Ethernet is off to a strong start with the first-generation PE Socket, but this is a solution that shouldn't be considered as a like-for-like alternative to running Cat5 cables.
If the option is available (pre- or post-build), equipping a property with low-cost dedicated network cabling will always deliver the best performance. But running large reels of new cable isn't always an option, and that's where Powerline solutions come into play.
For those awkward areas that wireless won't reach, the Power Ethernet Socket is a particularly attractive solution. Fitting neatly in place of a double-gang wall socket, it's well designed, easy to install and delivers stable network performance for up to four devices.
But an off-putting price tag of around £100 per socket is a major downside, and if Power Ethernet has aspirations of becoming a viable alternative to the numerous Homeplug adaptors already on the market, it'll need to slash a hefty amount off the asking and get up to speed by introducing a quicker 500Mbps model.
