Conclusion

...Ryzen 7 1700 empowers ROG Strix GL702ZC with outstanding multi-core performance never before seen at this price point.

Attempting to deploy desktop-grade components in a laptop form factor is a process typically fraught with danger. The trade-offs tend to include excessive heat and noise, poor battery life, and a bulky form factor that doesn't lend itself to everyday portability.

These caveats all apply to the ROG Strix GL702ZC, yet in this case the component choices also introduce a few noteworthy benefits. Offering something a little different to the norm, Asus equips the 17.3in mobile powerhouse/desktop replacement with an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 processor and AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics. The latter is merely adequate at the native 1080p resolution and is aided by FreeSync support, but it is the former that helps the laptop stand out from the crowd.

Armed with eight cores and 16 threads, Ryzen 7 1700 empowers ROG Strix GL702ZC with outstanding multi-core performance never before seen at this price point. It isn't for everyone, and we'd like to see Asus offer the option of dual-channel memory, GeForce graphics and a higher-resolution display, yet if your workload demands as many cores and threads as possible, the GL702ZC serves as a surprise option.

Bottom line: ROG Strix GL702ZC is far from perfect, yet it echoes AMD Ryzen's penchant for disruption. Where else can you get an eight-core, 16-thread laptop for under Ā£1,500?

I like the fact that Hexus actually used Intel versions of the same chassis so we can actually have a more accurate comparison of the CPUs!! Not many websites bother to do that,so good on Hexus!!
Interesting that in Timespy it's right up there with a GTX 1060 6GB; I'd love to see a laptop with the Ryzen 5 2500U and an RX 580, particularly if AMD could sort the graphics switching out nicely…!

Matching a 1060 makes sense, the 580 is a bit faster in desktop form (so once slowed down to fit in a laptop the 1060 catches up). I'd rather see small vega in a laptop with small ryzen, after all it ought to be better than a 580

The other asus laptops in the comparison aren't the same chassis - the one with the 1060 is substantially thinner, and the others all have different dimensions
I second the comments of those above asking for a smaller Vega in the laptop at low clock speeds. Vega's power inefficiency is because it's overvolted and overclocked as standard, just like Fury was. If AMD dialled it back, it'd be a nice fit. Perhaps something like an RX Vega 32 at ~1GHz clock speed.

They are both the GL702 series so the length and breadth are the same,as is the screen and battery capacity.

At least that way battery life measurements seem more relevant.
