For our US HEXUS.bang4buck ratings, we'll be using the US price taken from Newegg.com. Please be aware that all US prices are excluding tax.

HEXUS.PiFast Quake 4 Multitasking UK Price (Scan.co.uk) US Price (Newegg.com)
AMD Phenom X3 8750 71.4 74.4 74.6 £128 $195
AMD Phenom X4 9750 70.5 73.8 88.8 £137 $215
AMD Phenom X4 9550 65.6 70.6 81.1 £123 $200
AMD X2 6400+ 89.7 81.3 57.9 £103 $163
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 88.9 83.3 100 £135 $230
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 100 100 72 £114 $190

As expected, single-threaded value for money remains with the dual-core chips. This time around, AMD's X2 6400+ punches ahead of Intel's Core 2 Duo E8200 due to its lower price of $163.

Our Quake 4 HEXUS.bang4buck rating tells the same story. Spending more on tri-core or quad-core processors doesn't yield a boost in performance and therefore, the dual-core chips remain best value for money.

The multitasking HEXUS.bang4buck tells a largely different story. AMD's Phenom processors, including the tri-core X3 and quad-core X4s, are priced much more competitively. Though Intel's Core 2 Quad still comes out on top, the gap is increasingly small due to its high asking price of $230.

HEXUS.bang4buck summary (US)

Customers in the US face a different choice. Though Intel's Q6600 is the clear choice for UK buyers, AMD's Phenom X3 8750 proves to be a reasonable alternative for US buyers, based on performance-per-dollar
