--- Thermal Performance, Conclusion and Certification

Thermal Performance

As our thermal tests of the Intel stock cooler got under way, the main reason for the existence of third-party coolers started to become clear. Intel's stock cooler showed its vulnerabilities at idle, coming in second to last with a reading of 52 degrees.

Under load, the Intel stock cooler faired a little better, coming in 22nd out of 27 with a reading of 66 degrees.

Conclusion

While the Intel cooler is likely to take the lead in a number of different categories due to some fundamentally sound design features, the thermals were very disappointing. In saying that, though, we accept that Intel is building the cooler to a budget because, in most cases, it goes out as part of a CPU sale. Including anything a whole lot better would ramp up the price of the overall package.

This effort to hold down the cost of Intel's cooler was always going to be a result in a component unable to offer ultimate performance – even if it does do what's basically required. And that's where the makers of third-party coolers come in, to fill the performance gap.
