The Thecus N7700 NAS server has certainly been around the block a couple of times. We took a look at the original over a year ago, but since then the unit has resurfaced in numerous guises.
Back in June '09 the NAS box was upgraded to include an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and relaunched as the N7700SAS, and that model was then usurped just months later with the launch of the N7700PRO - a revised model equipped with a PCIe 8x slot capable of supporting a 10Gb Ethernet adapter.
Performance has improved with each upgrade, but Thecus reckons there's still room to manoeuvre and has recently announced its latest variation; the N7700+.
This time around, the device is something of a mix between the original N7700 and the N7700PRO. Perhaps hoping to reach a price point below the latter's £850 asking price, the N7700+ retains its support for 10Gb Ethernet but tones down on horsepower elsewhere by reverting to a trusty Intel Celeron CPU and 2GB of DDR2 memory.
Arm it with a 10Gb Ethernet adapter and Thecus reckons it's capable of data transfer speeds of up to 300MB/s.
Elsewhere, it offers all the functionality you come to expect from an N7700 device - including seven SATA drive bays supporting up to 14TB of storage in RAID modes 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD.
There's no mention of pricing or availability as yet, but further details are available at the official Thecus product page. In related news, the Taiwanese manufacturer has also given the PCIe 8x makeover to its eight-bay rackmount solution, now aptly dubbed the N8800+. Hit the press releases for all the info.
