Thecus has today launched the world's first NAS to support either 2.5in and 3.5in hard drives in the form of the N0503 ComboNAS.

The unit, pictured below and first seen by HEXUS at last month's COMPUTEX, can support up to five 2.5in hard drives held vertically in a removable cage or three 3.5in drives mounted horizontally.

Thecus reckons that the added functionality gives unparallelled flexibility to users, but be aware that combining both 2.5in and 3.5in drives in a single unit is a no go, it is one or the other.

Elsewhere, the N0503 ComboNAS sports an Intel Atom processor and supports RAID modes 0, 1, 5, 6 and JBOD. As you'd expect, there's all the usual gubbins including server support for iTunes and uPnP AV streaming. Worth noting that the unit will also support Thecus' new-and-improved AJAX user interface.

The complete spec can be found over at Thecus' official product page, but we've yet to receive any indication of pricing.

Thats pretty neat!

Especially with 1TB 2.5" drives being announced.
Being such an innovative manufacturer, maybe Thecus would like to be the first to bring data de-duplication to the consumer NAS. It can't be that hard to implement.
Are there any reviews available yet?

This was announced the same day I bought a QNAP TS-409 - which I'm trying to return or sell!

Thecus fits my need perfectly by the looks of it but I'd be interested in the power consumption. (diskless, or with 3 x 3.5" disks). I'd probably use WOL a lot but if standby/sleep operation is low enough, I would leave it on during the day
