Microsoft has finally named the date for the general availability of Windows 10. It will become available beginning 29th July this year. Users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Key features of Windows 10 include the return of the Start Menu, support for DirectX 12 and innovative features such as Cortana and Continuum.

While Windows 10 brings back the Start Menu and is said to be better than ever for desktop PC users it is also designed to run on the "broadest device family ever", including Windows PCs, Windows tablets, Windows phones, Windows for the Internet of Things, Microsoft Surface Hub, Xbox One and Microsoft HoloLens.

Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users will qualify for a free upgrade for a full year following 29th July 2015. In an email to HEXUS concerning the upgrade, Microsoft said that "Once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, Microsoft will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device—at no cost."

If you want to be one of the first to get your free Windows upgrade you will be able to reserve a copy. If you look down at your system tray icons today you might notice a little Windows icon that wasn't there before. If you click that you can reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade. It is said to be a 3GB download.

*Must be running the latest version of Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) to receive the free upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update.

Any word on clean installs? I am about due a reinstall and the timing on the upgrade is perfect.
No word yet, but I would do a clean windows 7 or 8 install then upgrade to 10
If you are seeing a small white windows icon in your taskbar offering to update to Windows 10 then this was caused by update KB3035583.

It can be removed by going to Control Panel > Programs > View installed updates (under Programs and Features). Select update and click uninstall. It can also be ignored by selecting “customise” white arrow and setting this icon to Hide icon and notifications.

Next time the PC prompts for an update just select KB3035583 and hide.

If this is the sort of nonsense MS is going to push then I won't be going anywhere near Windows 10.
