Microsoft has published a new app on the Windows store, for Windows 10 Technical Preview users, which offers Xbox avatar creation and manipulation. Right now the app is not fully functional as when selected some features pop up a message simply saying 'coming soon'.
The work-in-progress Windows 10 app was announced by Major Nelson yesterday and it has already become available in the store. Windows Central has had a play around with the free app and made a video showing how it works on a Microsoft Surface. You can see that video below:
Using the new app you can easily change your Xbox avatar appearance; your character's shape, skin, hair, facial features, and more. Also your character's clothes and accessories can be chosen from an extensive range of colours, patterns and designs available. If there's not enough choice for your fickle tastes then the Avatar marketplace is accessible from the new app, an in-app button redirects you to the browser where there are a few free extras available and plenty of 'casual purchase pricing' level items for you to add to your avatar.

A notable feature not enabled in this early version of the Windows 10 Xbox Avatars app is called 'Photobooth'. When selected you are greeted by the message that this feature is 'coming soon'. What Photobooth does is open to conjecture. Rather than being a way to bring actual photos into the app, Windows Central reckons it will be used to capture poses of your avatar so you can share them on social networks and so on.
We should expect to see more crossover apps between Xbox, Windows 10 PCs and mobile as Microsoft unifies the platform. In a week's time Microsoft will kick off its BUILD conference in San Francisco where we will hear much more about the firm's plans in the near to medium term.
