Best of British guides

The AA has rolled out four free iPhone apps designed to direct Brits to the best places to eat and stay in the UK, while on the go.

The annual AA lifestyle guides, which have been published for over a century, have undergone a digital makeover in partnership with localised search provider Mobile Commerce. Four editions: AA Hotel Guide, AA B&B Guide, AA Restaurant Guide and AA Caravan and Camping Guide Britain are now available to download for the iPhone.

Users can sift through the wealth of information in each app to locate the cosiest campsite or most bustling bistro nearby. There are over 1,000 restaurants, 2,650 B&Bs, 850 camp sites and more than 2,400 recommended hotels listed, all assessed by the AA's formidable rating system.

Users are able to use the iPhone's GPS feature to search around their current location or select a specific destination to look up listings. Each haunt boasts a detailed description, pictures, contact info, booking functionality where available, plus links to the establishment's personal website.

Another handy feature allows peckish users to search by cuisine type, or by the AA's star rating system.

"Moving our guidebook content online is a strategic decision with dual benefits; it moves the AA brand into a digital arena and promotes our membership base to a new audience, which they may not have been able to target before," said Simon Numphud, manager of AA Hotel Services.

All four guides are available from the iTunes store.
