Apple's move into the gaming arena with the iPhone seems to have paid off after reports from The Wall Street Journal confirm that sales of software have been substantial.

The article claims that software developers have been surprised by the results of game sales and Sega claim that 300,000 copies of its $9.99 Super Monkey Ball game were sold in the first 20 days that it went on sale. "That's a substantial business," says Simon Jeffery, president of Sega's U.S. division. "It gives iPhone a justifiable claim to being a viable gaming platform." Other games that are also selling well are Crash Nitro Kart and Bejeweled 2.

iPhone users can download games via the App Store, where they can also browse and download applications. In an interview at Apple's headquarters, Steve Jobs claims that users have downloaded more than 60 million programs and the company has been taking approximately $1million a day in sales.

Mr. Jobs could hardly contain his excitement:

"This thing's going to crest a half a billion, soon," he said. "Who knows, maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time."

"I've never seen anything like this in my career for software," he concluded.
