Microsoft has today bid farewell to laser with the expected launch of its BlueTrack technology - a new tracking system that'll allow users to mouse on virtually any surface.
BlueTrack, co-invented by Microsoft senior engineering architect David Bohn, uses a large blue beam and specular optics to generate a high-contrast picture of the mousing surface, allowing for vastly-improved tracking accuracy. Microsoft claims that the BlueTrack light beam is four times larger than the average laser, making its mice usable on tough surfaces such as carpet or granite.
The technology will first appear in two devices; the Microsoft Explorer Mouse (pictured) and the Microsoft Explorer Mini Mouse. Both are expected to arrive this November, priced at $99.95 and $79.95, respectively.
The blue glow that you're seeing isn't the work of Photoshop, either. Microsoft's BlueTrack mice feature a smart-looking chrome trim and blue-lighting around the bottom rim - you'll want your colleagues to know your mouse is special, right?
There's no mention of a left-handed version, but the ergonomic design will suit right-handers and the usual 2.4GHz wireless technology provides a range of up to 30 feet. While the desktop mouse looks impressive, it's the "Mini Mouse" that catches our eye. We've often used pieces of paper to provide a clear surface for our portable mice - that's one problem the BlueTrack technology should solve.
