Intel has setup a new 'Digital Communities' initiative, which involves 13 pilot schemes to help communities create wireless network connectivity for various purposes.

Improving local government efficiency, promoting economic growth and increasing community satisfaction are all on Intel's list of aims to be gotten from the new high-tech scheme. Everyone from meter readers to school teachers will benefit from the initiative, according to Intel.

The pilot projects aren't just taking place in the US. The scheme is being put into place in places around the world, including the UK, Brazil and Taiwan.

Anand Chandrasekher, vice president and director, Intel Sales and Marketing Group, said that "As wireless technology continues to evolve, local governments are seizing the opportunity to address critical issues in their community including equal and affordable access to broadband and more efficient and effective government services."

If the schemes prove successful, Intel's digital community initiative could put them at the forefront of creating Wi-Fi communities.

Intel has issued a press release with more details on the initiative.
