AMIMON's WHDI technology seems to be gaining plenty of momentum, with several partners offering transmitter/receiver kits and even GPU's integrating the technology. However, the common thread that joins all of the products so far is a general lack of portability. Even the USB-powered transmitter boxes are fairly bulky.

Now, though, the technology's creators have come up with a tidy little solution. AMIMON has announced that it will be launching the WHDI Stick, a dongle that shrinks the transmitter down to the size of an old-school USB thumb-drive.

The 81mm (3.2in) Stick will be compatible with existing WHDI devices, meaning that it should hook up to any receiver boxes that you already have.  It's then free to beam a 60Hz 1080p HDMI 1.4a-compliant signal across distances of up to 30m with under 1ms of latency, even if the content requires HDCP 2.0.

The solution is completely plug-and-play, meaning that once it's been connected to an HDMI port, it's essentially ready to go. Unfortunately, the lack of power through the video-port means that a USB connection is still needed, making the package slightly less comprehensive. Nonetheless, it's still far and away the most compact WHDI solution to date.

AMIMON won't be making the Stick itself, so it's up to technology partners to bring it to market. However, considering the number of major players that have already shown a serious interest in the technology, we expect to see plenty of WHDI Sticks available when it launches next year.
