More about the apps

The most complex of the programs with this version of Sugar - it seems to us - is Etoys but we haven't had the chance to spend enough time with it to get our heads even a quarter-way round it.

About the only tip we can give is that - like AbiWord but unlike the other supplied apps - right-click context-sensitive menus play a big part in what you do and the selections you can make.

Sugar - Group Chat

Sugar - Browser home page - closing or switching
Web browser default home page. Clicking on the active app's
own icon, which appears on the top toolbar, lets
you choose to close it or switch to the neighbourhood view

Another tip worth knowing is that - in the absence of right-click options in the web browser - Ctrl-C and Ctl-V do work for copy and pasting.

Sugar - Browser gmail
Browsing Google Mail on line

Sugar - Memosono pairs-matching game
Memosono pairs-matching game. This is accompanied by
sounds, apparently, but in the implentation of Sugar we
were running within VMware Player, there was no sound

Sugar - AbiWord word processor - saving file
AbiWord word processor - saving file. A lot of the depth of the app
is concealed until you start right-clicking and discover context menus

Sugar - TamTam music and sound exploration app
TamTam. This is an exploration app for music and sound but, not
having any sound, we didn't twig until we checked out the OLPC Wiki

We reckon that the OLPC's OS and apps are coming along nicely and can only hope that the target price of US$100 for the complete laptop still remains feasible.

But what do you reckon? Let us know your thoughts - and the results of your fiddling with Sugar - in this thread in the HEXUS.lifestyle.news forum.

You may want to update the article with the fact that you can also run this on an Intel Mac with the free beta of VMware Fusion :)

Thanks VERY much - done that and given you a little credit.

Cheers

The other is the current beta version of the OLPC's Unix-based XO operating system, with its Sugar front-end
Is that the real name of the OS or a succinct review edited for foul language?
