Even though the flagship device for Google's upcoming Android 3.0 ('Honeycomb') is the Motorola Xoom, there are plenty more high-profile slates on the way. Toshiba has already teased its imaginatively named 'Tablet' and LG announced its G-Slate at CES, although it largely stayed in the shadow of the Xoom.

Now LG and US launch-partner T-Mobile have given the device a proper unveiling, detailing some of the finer points of the hardware. The 8.9in 1,280x720px slate will be equipped with the increasingly-familiar combo of a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 SoC running Google's tablet-friendly Honeycomb OS. Inside there'll be 32GB storage, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, WiFi and support for T-Mo's 4G HSPA+ network.

So far, nothing special, but the G-Slate kicks things up a notch by including a trio of cameras. The 2MP sensor on the front will support over-the-air video chat, while the two 5MP/1080p shooters on the back - complete with an LED-flash - are capable of capturing 2D and 3D photos and video.

What's more, the slate will be capable of playing back that 3D HD content right on the device, although it does mean that you'll need to wear some form of 3D glasses. Given the NVIDIA pedigree, we assume they'll be active shutter, but that's just a guess for the time being. In case you don't feel like carrying a pair of 3D glasses around, the device can also output 3D 1080p content to a TV over HDMI. In a world of me-too tablets, that should certainly help set the G-Slate apart.

Even if 3D doesn't float your boat, the ability to handle 3D video at 1080p is a testament to the impressive processing-power of NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chip.

Unfortunately, the G-Slate is going to be limited to the US for the time being, where it will launch at some point in March - probably just after the Xoom. However, an inadvertent slip to Pocket Lint during a CES interview suggested that a non-4G version of the tablet would be making its way over to the UK at some point as well.

I like the look, but since I'm not really into 3D - especially with glasses on a mobile device - I'd probably opt for the Xoom. Save a few pennies, but get essentially the same experience.
I love everything about the Xoom and hope it lives up to the hype
