With Intel's second-generation Atom platform already out in the open, we've been wondering when Packard Bell might get around to updating its dot line of ultra-portable netbooks.
Fortunately for any who've been waiting, the time is now as the Acer subsidiary has officially unveiled the successor to the ageing dot s in the form of the new-and-improved dot s2.
Based on Intel's Pine Trail platform, Packard Bell's latest comes equipped with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450 processor and CPU-integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics. That's joined by a 250GB hard disk, Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter operating system and a six-cell battery as standard that promises "up to 10 hours of battery life".
Bringing it all together is a 10.1in LED-backlit widescreen display, but Packard Bell hasn't yet divulged the screen resolution. Judging by the unit's similar design, we're going to go ahead and assume it's the same 1,024x600 resolution available on the original dot s.
Measuring 258mm x 185mm x 25mm and weighing just 1.25kg, the system promises "extreme portability" and comes equipped with a number of useful-but-expected features including a five-in-one card reader, a multi-touch trackpad, built-in webcam and Wireless N, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity.
Sounds like a useful ultra-portable for everyday web access and email, but Packard Bell reckons it's also ideal for "complete photo and video editing". We're not so sure, but we won't say no to the free bundled copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.
The dot s2, available in a choice of Cherry Red, NightSky Black or Glacier White will be available this month priced at £299.99.
