Xiaomi hosted a special event in Shanghai a few hours ago. The main attraction was the launch of the Mi MIX 2S smartphone. Xiaomi took plenty of stage time explaining the attractiveness of its latest state-of-the-art smartphone, with fast processing (Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 supported by 8GB RAM), and great screen, and high quality cameras. Of course it was compared positively against the Apple iPhone X - but delivered with Xiaomi-style pricing. However, of greater surprise and interest was the launch of the first ever Xiaomi branded gaming laptop.
At the time of writing there is yet to be a full product page or specifications page uploaded to the official site so I just have some specification highlights today. The new Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is a 15.6-inch Full HD wide-colour gamut (72 per cent NTSC) screen equipped machine with narrow screen bezels (9.9mm) in a businesslike 20.9mm deep brushed aluminium chassis.
The laptop has 4x 16 million colour RGB lighting zones plus the RGB keyboard. This keyboard offers anti-ghosting with 30-key rollover and five programmable keys for your favourite (gaming) functions. For audio, Xiaomi has equipped stereo 3W speakers with Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio certification.
Inside there are some options to be chosen by the buyer. Alongside the Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU you can opt for either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4GB) or GTX 1060 (6GB) graphics chip. The lower spec machine comes with 8GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD along with a 1TB HDD and costs ¥5,999 ($960). The higher spec machine is equipped with 16GB of RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD, and a 1TB HDD and is priced at ¥8,999 ($1,440). Your performance components are cooled by a Xiaomi designed twin fan-based system including 3+2 heatpipes and four air exhausts.
Connectivity is plentiful for a svelte laptop, with the Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop sporting four USB 3.0 ports, two USB-C ports, HDMI output, and a 3.5mm jack with a high power headphone amp.
The Xiaomi Mi Gaming Laptop is set to go on sale in China from 13th April.
