Sanyo demos innovative new batteries

Normally, rechargeable batteries lose their charge completely after just a few weeks, due to a phenomenon known as self-discharge.SANYO however were showcasing a new hybrid battery technology called “eneloop” that helps to prevent this problem.

Whereas normal Nickel CaDium or Nickel Metal Hydride batteries would completely discharge and therefore lose some of their capacity after just 2 or 3 weeks, SANYO Eneloop batteries are able to maintain 90% of their charge after 6 months, 85% after a year, and an astonishing 75% after 2 years.

But that’s not all; because due to the fact that the batteries don’t self-discharge that quickly, you can buy the batteries off the shelf and use them straight away without any harmful effects.

Currently they’re only available in Japan but should be available later this year in Europe. Available in AA and AAA sizes, you can also buy C and D cell adapters (although due to the significantly reduced capacity of an AA cell versus C or D cell’s, this may result in a much shorter run-time for the device).
