HP to support HD DVD too

Related to our Fox/Blu-Ray Story, Hewlett Packard have announced in a Press Release that they will now support HD DVD. Previously, Hewlett Packard were exclusively supporting Blu-Ray and had asked the Blu-Ray guys to support two technologies… but as the press release states because Blu-Ray hasn’t adopted iHD, HP have decided to go with HD DVD now as well.

Said Maureen Weber, general manager, Personal Storage Business, HP:

"We're encouraged that the Blu-ray Disc Association is adopting Mandatory Managed Copy. Because HP wants to deliver the most user-friendly and cost-effective solution to our customers, we have decided to support both formats. By joining the HD-DVD Promotions Group and continuing work with the Blu-ray Disc Association, HP will be in a better position to assess true development costs and, ultimately, provide the best and most affordable solution for consumers."

With the loss of the exclusive support of the United States’ second biggest computer manufacturer, the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD race is thrown wide open yet again… Sony’s PS3 is reported to support Blu-Ray, which was a consideration in Fox choosing to back the standard. Will this still be the case come launch day?
