The March release of the Catalyst suite is upon us, and with it comes the first official release of ATI's Avivo video converter.
The Avivo video converter uses the GPU to accelerate the video transcoding process. This allows recorded or downloaded files to be transcoded into other formats quicker than with other encoders, resulting in files that are ready to use in a shorter amount of time. ATI is pushing this for use with devices like iPods, where the user might want to record a TV show, transcode it and save it to their iPod to view later.
Also included in the release are a number of performance enhancements and bug fixes. Call of Duty 2 gets a 10-15% performance boost, ATI say. The 6.13 release notes have full details.
Head over to ATI's knowledge base, which has the latest drivers, along with useful info on how to get features like H.264 acceleration working.
Update: It's been pointed out in the HEXUS.community that a new set of Linux drivers (8.23.7) are also available. However, it looks like there's still no support for X1-series cards, which will displease a number of Linux-using ATI card owners.
