When we reported that Best Buy had launched its UK web store last week, a few readers went off to have a nose around the virtual shelves. While there, one eagle-eyed Hexite (thanks boryssts) managed to stumble across quite a gem by unearthing what appeared to be an unannounced AMD HD 7000-series GPU in an HP desktop.
The Omni 100 is a fairly standard budget-minded all-in-one that we first spotted back in September. The AMD Athlon-powered system is now available to buy, but the retailers page has the GPU listed as an "ATI Radeon HD 7270". We'd normally assume that this was a simple typo, but HP's product page matches the details posted on Best Buy's site.
Unfortunately, neither source has any details on the graphics-chip, and with absolutely no known details on these unreleased parts - other than a rumoured Q2 2011 release date - we can't even offer conjecture on its specs.
There are two possible explanations for the early appearance of this GPU. Since it's unlikely that the all new architecture is already shipping, it's possible that this is a rebranded GPU that's been upgraded to the 7000-series moniker.
Unfortunately, though, it's a lot more likely that this is just a typo that originated within HP and has propagated through to retailers. The manufacturer's US site lists the GPU as the integrated Radeon HD 4270 - a likely fit for an AIO PC. It also makes sense of the ATI branding, which still applies to the older GPUs, but has been dropped from new graphics chips starting with the HD 6000-series.
We can still keep our fingers crossed, but we wouldn't recommend rushing out and buying this desktop in the hope of getting a next-generation GPU.
