AMD boasts of Hollywood ties

He also maintains AMD helps his studio "keep ahead of the artistic curve" by allowing it to "manipulate images or scenes without having to wait on the technology."

AMD's director of digital media and entertainment, Charlie Boswell, reckons the combination of ATI FirePro graphics and the firm's new six-core Opteron processors are the key to quick movie creation and don't burden creative minds by the process.

Still, it's worth bearing in mind that when it comes to workstation graphics, NVIDIA still reign supreme with some 90 per cent of the market. And according to an NVIDIA spokesman, "many, in fact probably all major movie studios have opted for and continue to choose Quadro."

Indeed, at GTC recently, LucasFilm's Richard Kerris' gave a keynote about how his studio and others, including ILM, were working more and more closely with NVIDIA GPUs in their production pipelines. "That's pretty significant as their reach is broad," NVIDIA's spokesman told HEXUS.  

Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) also recently announced that its animated film "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" had been made using NVIDIA's technology.

And for those interested in more sci-fi special effects, NVIDIA also boasts that films like "Star Trek" and "Terminator Salvation" have likewise been made using Quadro graphics capabilities.        

In other words, NVIDIA is telling AMD and Robert Rodriguez to eat their shorts.
