Pictures of the new socket for AMD's Opteron processors, known as Socket F, have appeared on Tweakers.net, a Dutch tech-website.
Given that I can speak fluent Dutch (thanks Babelfish), I'll do a little bit of translation from the website.
Also known as Socket 1207, socket F has an LGA arrangement, with pins on the board rather than the processor, much like Intel's current socket system. There's DDR-II support, and also the suggestion that processors could contain PCIe controllers. It's also looking like individual processor cores could have their own pinout to the motherboard. There's also going to be a socket 1206, which will be similar what socket 939 is to socket 940.
Interesting stuff, though we won't be using them for a while.
