Talks of a delay in the launch of Intel's Ivy Bridge platform, may actually be corroboration of earlier reports.

We reported, as early as May, that whilst best estimates were placing the Ivy Bridge launch to take place in 1H 2012, information apparently passed down from Intel to its partners indicated that the chip giant, had pencilled in Q2 - specifically, between March and April, 2012 - to unleash Ivy Bridge.

New reports appear to suggest the same - indicating that the desktop Ivy Bridge platform is expected to see the light of day in March, followed by the mobile platform in April. What's not apparent, is whether there's any truth in murmurings suggesting that this anticipated release schedule, may also be pushed out of the ballpark.

We're told that the reasons for the 'delay' range from perceived fluctuation in demand, to Intel holding back on bringing 22nm production capabilities to Fab 24.

If it is pushed back any further, I'm much more likely to jump on Bulldozer. I need to build my system soon after Christmas. I was willing to perhaps wait until March, but any later is far too much. If Bulldozer benches well and is competetive vs the i5-2500k, it has my sale.
I'm really keen to know whether or not the new Ivy Bridge CPUs can go into current motherboards - specifically my new MSI Z68 chipset-based one, which is currently running a Pentium CPU as a ‘place holder’.

It's safe to assume they can, given Gigabytes's announcement, so it is more to do with how willing your board vendor is really.

Until it is released I would not assume it will work perfectly in older socket 1155 motherboards.

I'm sure I read that Ivy Bridge will be backward compatible with the Sandybridge chipsets, but not vice versa, ie that a Sandy Bridge CPU will not work in a Ivy Bridge board.

As always though, and as the Cat has alluded, it'll be down to the motherboard manufacturer to maintain campatibility.
