We know that Cell is the much hyped chip at the heart of the up-coming PlayStation three, but the three companies behind the chip are now looking to push it beyond the games console.
Sony, Toshiba and IBM have published documents containing tech specs and software standards for the Cell chip. The aim? They want people to think up new uses for the Cell chip, to help them sell Cell to outside companies
According to ZDNet, more documents are on the way, which will also include references to 'companion chips' to Cell, such as one capable of recording 48 MPEG-2 streams simultaneously... nice!
