ARCTIC's Accelero S3 passive graphics card cooler is now available. The cooler is entirely passive and thus keeps your graphics card cool and silent. It's suitable for both AMD or Nvidia graphics cards and offers up to 135W of cooling performance.

The Accelero S3 builds on the firm's previous S1 PLUS with an improved patented heat sink design. This 'high end' cooler can cope with the heat produced by mid range graphics cards such as the R7-260X or a GTX 660. ARCTIC says that you can use the Accelero S3 with an optional 'Turbo Module' fan to cool as much as a 200W load to open up more GPU options.

ARCTIC has taken into consideration the fact that it's not just the GPU on your graphics card that gets hot and needs its thermals attended to, so offers a new back side cooler to cover other important performance components such as the RAM and VRMs. The back plate construction brings along an additional structural benefit: the cooling system is clamped onto your graphics card and doesn't require a user to fiddle around with thermal glue.

The ARCTIC Accelero S3 passive cooler is compatible with the following graphics cards:

  • Nvidia
    GTX 750(Ti), 660, 650(Ti*), 550 Ti*, GTS 450*, 240(OEM)*, GT 640, 630, 440, 340, 330, 320, 240, 220
  • AMD
    R9 270*, R7 260(X*), 250(X), 240, HD 8760*, 8740, 7850*, 7790*, 7770*(GHz*), 7750, 7730, 6850*, 6770*, 6750, 6670(LP), 6570, 5770*, 5750, 5670, 5550(OEM), 4850*, 4830*, 4770, 4730, 4670, 4650, 4550, 4350(LP), 3870*, 3850, 3690, 3650, 3470, 3450

KEY: * recommended with properly ventilated case only, ** recommended with S3 turbo Module only

The Accelero S3 heatsink measures 230 (L) x 135 (W) x 42 (H) mm and the back plate heatsink 218 (L) x 98 (W) x 23 (H) mm. Those parts weigh 410g and 305g respectively. The heatsink is made from aluminium and the four heatpipes included in the design have a diameter of 6mm.

As mentioned in the intro the ARCTIC Accelero S3 is available now. It's listed on Amazon UK for £34.99 inc postage.

AVOID! The passive S2 ruined my 9800GT and GTS250 cards in the past!
Love Artic! I'm about to pull the trigger on the Twin Turbo III for my GTX 970 in my HTPC! I bought a reference design blower style from PNY and it's not as quiet as I would like!
They're OK, but the spring tensioning mechanism on them is a worry. A lot of load is put on 4 small holes with 4 tiny springs supposed to be supporting a lot of weight hung at funny angles. Glad they exist though.
I have had good experience with one of their past product on a 4850 (S1r2?). I wouldn't buy one without review, but I'd definitely look into them if I had a new build. I am surprised that it is only at “S3” after all those years though.
I am guessing that it is also good enough to cool a GTX 970 since the 970 has a lower TDP than the GTX 660…
